Joey Barton faces 12 charges for offensive posts targeting three public figures, with a social media following exceeding two million, prosecution says.
- On Monday , Joey Barton appeared at Liverpool Crown Court to face 12 counts related to offensive social media posts about Jeremy Vine, Eni Aluko, and Lucy Ward.
 - Between early January and mid-March last year, prosecutors say Barton published posts on X targeting three public figures with intent to cause distress rather than express concern.
 - Prosecutors pointed to posts comparing Ms Eni Aluko and Ms Lucy Ward to the `Fred and Rose West of commentary` and sharing superimposed images, while Barton sent messages to Jeremy Vine calling him `you big bike nonce`.
 - Peter Wright KC told jurors the posts crossed legal tolerability and amounted to criminal conduct, while Mr Barton, from Widnes, Cheshire, denies all charges and was sacked by Bristol Rovers in October 2023.
 - With a following exceeding two million, Joey Barton's posts described as `cutting, caustic, controversial and forthright` amplify debate on offensive speech limits in a democratic, open society.
