Joey Barton and another man were charged with wounding with intent after a fight near a golf club left one man seriously injured, police confirmed.
- On Sunday, Joey Barton, 43-year-old former Manchester City and England midfielder, was arrested on suspicion of wounding after an altercation at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club, and one man was taken to hospital with facial and rib injuries.

- Barton is already subject to a suspended sentence from 2025, which included 200 hours of unpaid work and costs over 20,000, after a Liverpool Crown Court trial found he used racial slurs and compared presenters to serial killers.
- Police say a 50-year-old man and a 43-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of s18 wounding and are currently in custody to be questioned by detectives.
- Police enquiries are drawing on local testimony and footage as investigators build the case; officers went door-to-door asking local residents for doorbell camera footage, while a neighbour said, 'We didn’t know if he had fallen or if he’d been attacked'.
