Villa said Rimmer was one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation and was not on the pitch at the end of either European Cup final.
Former Aston Villa and Manchester United goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer has died at the age of 78. Villa announced his death on Friday morning without providing additional details.
Rimmer played for Manchester United from 1965-74, then Arsenal for three years, before joining Villa from 1977-83. He was an ever-present during the English club's 1980-81 title-winning campaign.
In the 1982 European Cup final against Bayern Munich in Rotterdam, Rimmer started for Villa but suffered a neck injury after nine minutes. The team won 1-0 despite his exit.
Rimmer collected a European Cup winner's medal with Manchester United in 1968 as backup to Alex Stepney for the 4-1 win over Benfica at Wembley Stadium. He watched from the sidelines.
Tributes have poured in from across the United fan base, with the club expressing it was "deeply saddened" by his death. "Our thoughts are with Jimmy's loved ones," United stated.
