Jewish Scholar Elected to Lead Catholic Biblical Association
Levine will focus on transparency, stronger ties with Catholic bishops and outreach to Spanish-speaking audiences during her one-year term.
On July 20, 2026, the Catholic Biblical Association elected Amy-Jill Levine as president at its annual general meeting in Baltimore, marking the first Jewish scholar to lead the 90-year-old organization.
Levine, a distinguished New Testament scholar, joined the association 42 years ago and served on numerous committees, spending 12 years as book review editor for 'The Catholic Biblical Quarterly.'
Initially stunned by her nomination last year, Levine said she is 'honored and grateful' to lead the group, describing herself as a 'guest in the CBA household' emphasizing her commitment to collaborative work.
As president, Levine intends to strengthen relations with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and expand international outreach while confronting anti-Jewish interpretations of Christian Scripture.
Her one-year term will focus on bridging rigorous historical research with pastoral practice, aiming to deepen Catholic theology by taking 'with abundance seriously the humanity of this person' Jesus Christ.
