New Star Trek Movie Gets Timeline Details Months After Part 4’s Cancellation
Jonathan Goldstein said the script is in progress and the film will jump farther into the future with a new cast, Paramount Skydance said.
- At San Diego Comic-Con, Directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley revealed the upcoming Star Trek film will feature an all-new cast and move the timeline further into the future than any previous installment.
- This represents a historic first for the franchise, as each of the 13 theatrical films previously relied on characters from The Original Series or The Next Generation, with the last fresh start occurring in 1987.
- Goldstein explained the film "won't be the characters that you've seen previously in your Star Trek movies," and the pair confirmed it will take place "further in the future than we've been before."
- Paramount Skydance announced the project at CinemaCon, pursuing a "holistic" approach to reunite its TV and film divisions, with CEO David Ellison naming Star Trek a crown jewel property for the studio's future.
- While the script is currently in progress, the film lacks a release date; the franchise spans the Prime timeline, extending to the 32nd century, and the alternate Kelvin timeline that reached 2263.
