Jayden Maiava, New Playmakers Lead No. 14 USC to 42-26 Win over San Jose State in Season Opener
Maiava completed 17 passes to eight receivers and accounted for two touchdowns before USC pulled away for a 42-26 win.
On Saturday, August 29, 2026, No. 14 Southern California defeated San Jose State 42-26 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, with quarterback Jayden Maiava passing for 286 yards and three total touchdowns.
Heading into his third year after transferring from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Maiava anchored an offense that tallied more than 500 total yards as the Trojans pursue a College Football Playoff appearance in 2026.
Freshman wide receiver Trent Mosley starred in his debut, catching seven passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, becoming the first Power Four freshman receiver to reach those marks since 2018.
While the Trojans took a 28-0 lead into halftime, San Jose State quarterback Luke Weaver rallied the Spartans in the second half, outscoring USC 26-14 after the break.
Coach Lincoln Riley will lead the Trojans against the Fresno State Bulldogs at home on Friday, September 4, as USC aims to maintain momentum following the opening victory at the Coliseum.
