Japan’s Rapidus Says 2nm Chip Tech on Track for 2027
CHITOSE, HOKKAIDO, JAPAN, JUL 18 – Rapidus demonstrated electrical characteristics of 2nm gate-all-around transistors and aims for mass production in 2027 to compete with global semiconductor leaders.
- Japan's Rapidus Corporation unveiled a prototype of 2-nanometer semiconductor chips at a press event in Chitose, Hokkaido on July 18, 2025.
- This milestone follows Rapidus's establishment in 2022 and significant public and private funding, aiming to catch up after Japan lagged behind for over a decade.
- The prototype uses gate-all-around transistors produced with extreme ultraviolet lithography and fully single-wafer processing at Rapidus's IIM-1 foundry.
- CEO Atsuyoshi Koike said the chips passed initial tests on July 10 and expects customer interest to clarify later this year, while Chairman Tetsuro Higashi highlighted Japan's new leadership in advanced chip technology.
- Rapidus plans to begin mass production of 2nm chips by 2027, continuing efforts to improve yields and device performance amid global competition.
