Japan’s Emperor, Empress arrive in Netherlands
The visit includes ceremonies, wreath-laying and meetings to reinforce more than 400 years of ties and reflect on wartime history.
- On Saturday, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako arrived in the Netherlands, beginning a two-week official tour that also includes Belgium, marking their first visit to the Netherlands in 13 years.
- Staying at Het Oude Loo Castle until Tuesday, the Imperial couple rested before official engagements. According to the Imperial Household Agency, they recalled fond memories of their previous stay there 20 years ago.
- On Wednesday, the Emperor and Empress attended a welcoming ceremony hosted by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima and laid flowers at a war memorial, acknowledging the 'hardships of the past' during World War Two.
- Emperor Naruhito visited Leiden University on Thursday to meet students studying Japan, then toured the Peace Palace in The Hague, viewing the Great Hall of Justice and historical exhibits.
- The Imperial couple travels to Belgium on Saturday, where King Philippe and Queen Mathilde will welcome them to commemorate the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Belgium.
