Japan to raise visa fees for foreign nationals in first revision in 48 years
Single-entry visa fees rise to 15,000 yen and multiple-entry fees to 30,000 yen as Japan updates charges set in 1978.
Japan will increase single-entry visa fees to 15,000 yen and multiple-entry costs to 30,000 yen, marking the first revision in 48 years since 1978.
The Cabinet approved this change Friday to address inflation and exchange rate fluctuations that have persisted since fees were established in 1978.
Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu stated the government reviewed fees to align with Western nations, adding officials do not anticipate an immediate impact on inbound tourism.
Statutory caps for residency status changes and permanent residency applications were also raised, with fees potentially reaching 300,000 yen under the new framework.
The government plans to use additional revenue to support the record 4.13 million foreign residents by funding Japanese-language programs and strengthening anti-overstay measures.
The Japanese government is raising visa fees for foreigners for the first time in 48 years, starting July 1. “We have made this decision after careful consideration of various factors, and we do not expect it to have an immediate impact on inbound tourism,” said Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
