Japan PM Says Raised 'Serious Concerns' with Xi on South China Sea, Xinjiang
Takaichi addressed multiple regional security issues including South China Sea disputes and the safety of detained Japanese citizens, emphasizing direct dialogue for stability.
- On October 31, 2025, at the APEC summit in Gyeongju, Sanae Takaichi, Prime Minister of Japan, met Xi Jinping, President of China, seeking a `strategic and mutually beneficial relationship between Japan and China` and favouring direct, candid dialogue.
 - Known as a China hawk, Sanae Takaichi is Japan's first woman prime minister who regularly visits the Yasukuni shrine, and analysts at the University of Tokyo warned the meeting could be frosty as Xi withheld congratulations.
 - In their talks, Sanae Takaichi raised serious concerns about the South China Sea, Hong Kong, and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and pressed on Taiwan, Senkaku/Diaoyu islands, export controls on rare earths, and Japanese citizens in China.
 - Contextually, Xi told Japan's prime minister he hopes her government will have a `correct understanding` of China, according to state media, amid recent US engagements, including Takaichi hosting Donald Trump this week.
 - Following the talks, Sanae Takaichi announced last week Japan will spend two percent of gross domestic product on defence this fiscal year, with around 60,000 US military personnel based in Japan amid China and the Philippines maritime tensions.
