Japan condemns Putin’s visit to disputed islands

Japan called the visit unacceptable as Russia said the islands remain its land and decades of negotiations still have not produced a peace treaty.

  • On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first visit to the Kuril Islands, a Moscow-controlled archipelago claimed by Japan, touring a fish plant, hospital, and school on Iturup.
  • Japan asserts territorial rights to the southern islands, calling them the Northern Territories, after the Soviet Union seized them during the final days of World War II, preventing a formal peace treaty for decades.
  • Speaking on a warship Wednesday, Putin claimed the islands' status "is enshrined in international documents as a reality that arose following the outcome of World War II." He referenced constructive past relations with former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
  • Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said his country "strongly protests" the visit to Iturup, which Japan calls Etorofu. Motegi stated the islands are "Japan's inherent territory both historically and from the perspective of international law."
  • Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chair of Russia's Security Council, dismissed the protests on social media, writing that the Kuril Islands "were, are, and will remain Russian land" and warning of "monstrous consequences" for those who reject this.
