Opposition MPs Stage Anti-Gyanesh Kumar Protest at Jantar Mantar
Opposition MPs renewed their sit-in after police blocked a march and after they were denied a meeting with election commissioners.
- On Wednesday, INDIA bloc MPs intensified their protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid allegations of "vote chori."
- This demonstration followed Tuesday's eight-hour sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan after police thwarted a march to the Election Commission office and officials refused to meet with around 240 MPs.
- Addressing FIRs registered against him for entering Akashvani Bhawan, Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi asserted, "I have 45 FIRs against me. My target is that there should be 100 FIRs against me."
- Police lathi-charged workers of the Indian Youth Congress and National Students' Union of India at the protest site, while Aam Aadmi Party leaders in Delhi alleged widespread "vote theft" during a separate march.
- The confrontation stems from the controversial Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which opposition leaders argue risks denying genuine citizens their voting rights, though the Supreme Court upheld the exercise's legality in May.
