'Cheers' Co-Creator and Legendary TV Director James Burrows Dies
The prolific sitcom director helped shape Cheers, Friends and Will & Grace, and won 11 Emmy Awards over a five-decade career.
James Burrows, the prolific television director and co-creator of "Cheers," died on Friday at age 85 following a brief illness, his family confirmed.
Over an unparalleled career spanning more than five decades, Burrows directed more than 1,000 episodes of television, shaping iconic series including "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Taxi," and "The Big Bang Theory."
The 11-time Emmy Award winner believed "great comedy was never simply about laughter. It was about humanity, connection, and truth," managing ensembles by famously sending the "Friends" cast to Las Vegas early in production.
His family shared in a statement to People that Burrows will be "profoundly missed," noting he is survived by his wife, Debbie Easton, four daughters, and seven grandchildren.
Burrows reigned as television's preeminent sitcom helmer for more than 30 years, and his influence will continue through the countless artists and generations he inspired and mentored.
