Blaze Near Lytton Classified as Being Held with No Fire Growth Seen in Days, BCWS Says
THOMPSON-NICOLA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 8 – The human-caused Izman Creek wildfire has expanded rapidly due to wind and heat, prompting evacuation orders and highway closures along Highway 12, BC Wildfire Service said.
- The Izman Creek wildfire, located just north of Lytton, was ignited on July 1 due to an incident involving a malfunctioning RCMP trailer wheel, and has been contained with no expansion reported since July 4.
- The fire started when the trailer lost a wheel beside Highway 12, causing sparks in a grass-filled ditch, an incident described by the RCMP as unfortunate and occurring four years after the 2021 Lytton Creek fire.
- Firefighters completed fireguards on the northern and northeastern flanks, directly attacked the southern and western borders, and continue mop-up and patrol amid cooler weather and minimal fire activity.
- The BC Wildfire Service reported that despite stronger southwest winds, there has been little change in the fire’s activity, and under the present conditions, the wildfire is unlikely to expand further.
- Thanks to firefighting efforts and favourable weather, BCWS downgraded the Izman Creek blaze from a wildfire of note, implying the province currently has no significant wildfires threatening public safety.
