In Côte d'Ivoire, the public prosecutor demanded five years in prison against Mamadou Hawa Gassama, a member of the National Transitional Council of Mali, who was prosecuted for "offensive action against the head of State" of Côte d'Ivoire and "dissemination of outrageous expressions via the Internet." He had been arrested and placed under a detention warrant last July, following a private stay in the country.
The Malian parliamentarian, who was prosecuted in the Ivorian courts for "insulting the Head of State" after statements targeting Alassane Ouattara, was arrested in Abidjan last July. The decision was deliberated on 30 January.
Mamadou Awa Gassama appeared this Friday, January 9, 2026, before the criminal court of Abidjan-Plateau. He is being prosecuted for offending the head of the Ivorian State and spreading outrageous expressions on the Internet. At the end of the hearing, the prosecutor's office demanded a sentence of five years' imprisonment with a fine of 500,000 CFA francs. The verdict is expected on January 30th.
