The Hungarian Germans deserve a place in the heart of our memory culture. But even 80 years after the expulsions, their suffering is only mentioned in the shadow of German guilt. A commentary by Zita Tipold.
Eighty years ago, Imre Nagy, the communist interior minister of the Tildy government, submitted a draft decree on the deportation of Germans to the Council of Ministers, which was adopted after a historic debate. By 1948, some 185,000 people had been deported to ruined Germany.
