Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins Advances to the General Election for Governor in Alaska
More than 31,000 Alaskans have already voted as 17 candidates seek the governor’s office and voters decide whether to restore campaign donation limits.
- On Tuesday, Alaskans voted in a primary election determining finalists for governor, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House races. Under Alaska's top-four primary system, the four candidates receiving the most votes in each contest advance to the November general election.
- Voters also considered Ballot Measure 1, which proposes reimposing limits on political campaign donations. The ballot includes 17 gubernatorial candidates, 16 for U.S. Senate, and 15 for U.S. House, alongside 50 state legislative races.
- As of Monday, almost 22,000 Alaskans voted early and 9,000 cast absentee ballots. With 22,838 blank absentee ballots requested, election officials will count mailed ballots through August 28 with results updated regularly.
- Staffing shortages delayed polling stations in Nome and Point Lay, prompting the Alaska Federation of Natives to express deep concern over potential impacts on rural voter participation. These issues echoed previous election cycles marked by rejected absentee ballots in rural areas.
- State legislative races feature 50 contests, with incumbents facing challenges from multiple opponents in crowded primaries. Candidates finishing in the top four may withdraw until August 31, allowing potential strategic shifts before the November general election.
