Endangered Sea Turtle Travels 5,000 Miles From Wales to Texas on Journey Home
After more than two years of rehabilitation, the critically endangered turtle is set for release after experts confirmed it is male.
- On Tuesday, the rare Kemp turtle Rhossi arrived in Houston after completing an 18-hour, 5,000-mile journey from Wales, with experts confirming he is male ahead of his upcoming release.
- Found cold-stunned on Traeth Llydan in December 2023, the tiny turtle was rushed to Anglesey Sea Zoo, where the specialist team spent more than two years nursing him back to health.
- Joe Flannagan, Chief Vet of Houston Zoo, confirmed Rhossi is male and noted that his development has been enhanced by the extensive rehabilitation care he received.
- Now weighing more than 20kg and 77cm in length, Rhossi will be released into the Gulf of Mexico near Padre Island National Seashore on August 18.
- Anglesey Sea Zoo Owner Frankie Hobro stated that once Rhossi reaches maturity, he will "go on to become a breeding male and play his part" in strengthening the critically endangered population.
