The Italian government on Tuesday reversed a looming August deadline that sent millions of people rushing to renew their identity cards, leaving local registry offices unable to keep up with demand.

The Romanians who want to change their ID card with an e-card have two more months to benefit from this free service. The authorities have decided to extend the initial deadline, so that the new documents can be obtained without costs until August 29, 2026.
