Italy tells Israel to respect rights of Italians on Gaza flotilla after attack
- Italy urged Israel to uphold the rights of 58 Italians, including lawmakers, involved in a flotilla attempting to challenge the Gaza blockade following an attack on a boat in Tunisian waters.
- The attack followed similar incidents the night before and involved incendiary devices and drone targeting, which Tunisia's Interior Ministry called a premeditated act under investigation.
- Italy monitored the flotilla closely, stayed in contact with its spokesperson, instructed its Tel Aviv embassy to engage Israeli authorities, and called Israel's Foreign Minister to raise concerns.
- The Global Sumud Flotilla's British-flagged Alma ship experienced projectiles exploding and causing fire while people onboard shouted 'fire' and pointed to the sky, supported by shared CCTV footage.
- Israel dismissed flotillas as publicity stunts, defended its blockade to prevent smuggling, has intercepted activist boats before, and has not responded to Italy's accusations regarding the recent attack.
