Italy Recovers 10 Bodies From a Capsized Migrant Boat Off Malta. Fishing Vessel Rescues 48
The coast guard said 10 bodies were recovered as search operations continued after the boat overturned carrying nearly 60 people.
On Sunday, Italy's coast guard recovered 10 bodies after a fishing vessel rescued 48 migrants from a craft carrying around 60 people that capsized 83km east-southeast of Malta following departure from Libya.
The Libyan coast remains a primary departure point for migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Europe, where thousands have died during the journey, including at least 990 people this year according to the IOM.
Maltese authorities are coordinating search operations in an area approximately 84 kilometers southeast of Malta, where the vessel was reported to have capsized, as the Italian coast guard continues to assist at their request.
Earlier this week, demonstrators in Tripoli protested outside the UNHCR headquarters, holding signs reading "Libya is not the world's garbage bin," while UNSMIL warned against "misleading information and hate speech."
The European Commission proposed a framework last November to establish "return hubs" outside the European Union, though the plan still requires formal approval and the specific locations remain unannounced.
