The Italian government on Wednesday issued a decree allowing schools across the country to use metal detectors, similar to those used at airports, to screen students under certain conditions, as part of a government effort to prevent knife and gun violence in schools.
Several stabbing attacks at schools had shocked Italy. Now the Meloni government reacts: controls with metal detectors are supposed to provide more security – even unannounced.
Many knives circulate among the young Italians and the government tries to put a brake with metal detectors in the most conflictive schools and with the increase of penalties.
