Italy court acquits charity migrant rescuers accused of waste trafficking
SOS Mediterranee said the ruling could help other staff facing a separate trial over similar waste-handling charges.
An Italian court acquitted former crew members of the migrant rescue vessel Aquarius on Friday, concluding an eight-year case regarding allegations of illicit waste trafficking in Sicily.
Prosecutors in Sicily had accused the crew of illegally disposing of waste between 2017 and 2018, alleging the disposal reduced costs while creating a public health risk.
Around 24 people were placed under investigation when the case opened, and the Aquarius was seized in 2018 following a year-long investigation into waste disposal during rescue operations.
SOS Mediterranee welcomed the acquittals issued earlier this week, maintaining that all waste had been handled in accordance with regulations and consistently denying wrongdoing.
MSF expressed hope that this ruling might influence a separate trial in Catania involving staff members facing similar charges related to the rescue boat Vos Prudence.
