Children that Died in Geneva Lake Capsizing Attended Illinois School District
Police say 90 mph winds and two massive waves flipped the 25-foot boat, and seven other passengers were rescued.
- On July 3, a 25-foot Nautique capsized on Geneva Lake during a severe storm, killing three children: 7-year-old Abigail Oswald, 6-year-old Caleb Oswald, and an unnamed 10-year-old girl recovered from the sunken vessel.
- The National Weather Service reported a "sudden and severe" storm in Walworth County with peak winds of 90 to 100 mph. A 47-year-old operator with "extensive boating experience" attempted to maneuver the boat as the downburst struck.
- Seven individuals were rescued from the water, but the children became trapped in 32 feet of water despite wearing life jackets of "proper size and fit." Divers from Mabas division 4 and 5 recovered the children, though they could not be resuscitated.
- Brad Oswald, the children's father, organized a GoFundMe campaign that has raised $88,000 toward a $110,000 goal for a children's charity. Community Unit School District confirmed two of the children were students and extended condolences to the families.
- A joint investigation by The Wisconsin Department, Natural Resources, and the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency is currently underway. Eleven other agencies assisted with immediate needs as officials continue examining the circumstances.
