'It was an honor': Entangled whale freed from fishing gear
Rescuers used a 30-foot pole to cut rope from the whale’s tail, and the crew stayed until it began swimming again.
On Sunday, June 14, rescuers freed a young humpback whale entangled in fishing gear within the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, located 21 miles east of Boston.
The Provincetown-based Center reported boaters spotted the "relatively small whale" anchored by rope around its tail, prompting an urgent rescue before storms arrived Sunday evening.
Using a specialized knife attached to a 30-foot pole, the Marine Animal Entanglement Response team made multiple cuts to free the lines; the crew remained until the whale swam freely.
Maria Harvey, a responder from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, said "it was an honor to help this whale" while researchers expressed optimism about its recovery.
Entanglement remains a critical threat to marine life, highlighted by a critically endangered North Atlantic right whale spotted last week with fishing gear in Canada's Gulf of St. Lawrence.
