Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala breastplate came from Kent car bodyshop
MPS Body & Paint completed the orange fiberglass piece in 24 hours after being approached two and a half weeks before the Met Gala.
On Monday, May 4, reality star Kim Kardashian wore a burnt orange fiberglass breastplate at the Met Gala in New York City, styled by Allen Jones and molded from his 1969 sculpture Hatstand.
Artistic duo Whitaker Malem approached garage owners Martyn Smith and Nicki Hill two-and-a-half weeks ago, asking them to complete the fiberglass piece within 24 hours while shifting the design from metallic pink to orange.
Smith and Hill remained under strict confidentiality for two weeks, unaware the breastplate was destined for Kardashian or the Met Gala until discovering their handiwork in photographs from the New York event.
Following the gala, Smith's daughter stayed up to watch, "jumping up and down and squealing" upon recognizing the breastplate. Smith said, "People have started calling me a celebrity."
Smith, who started his shop 16 years ago, welcomed future commissions despite admitting limited familiarity with Kim Kardashian, noting the experience proved small local businesses can impact global fashion.
It was in a workshop in Lydd, a small town 100 km from London, that the piece, molded from a sculpture of Allen Jones, and signed by Whitaker Malem, gained the bright orange tone.
