It could soon be harder to see the full price of a plane ticket. Here's why
Travelers may have to compare more fares before checkout as the Transportation Department says the proposal could make the full price less visible.
The Department of Transportation proposed new regulations allowing airlines to advertise base airfares more prominently than total ticket prices, departing from existing Obama-era transparency rules.
Current federal guidelines, established by the Obama administration, require carriers to display full, all-inclusive ticket prices to prevent consumer deception during the booking process.
Marketing professor Justine Farrell of the University of San Diego warned the changes could mislead consumers by making it harder to compare actual flight costs when airlines emphasize low base fares.
Southwest Airlines formally opposes the proposal, arguing in written comments that the change would be "extremely disruptive" to the current system millions of consumers rely on for air travel.
Following Southwest's request, the Department of Transportation extended the public comment period for the proposal to August 21, giving stakeholders additional time to analyze potential impacts.
