Turkish authorities detain 17 soccer club officials in illegal betting probe
Authorities said betting-platform data from 2020 to 2026 linked suspects to wagers placed while they held official club roles.
On Friday, Turkish authorities detained 17 soccer club officials during simultaneous raids across Istanbul and nine provinces, while issuing warrants for two additional suspects in an illegal betting investigation.
The investigation began in October after the Turkish Football Federation examined betting platforms' data spanning 2020 to 2026, alleging officials placed illegal bets while serving in official roles.
Detained suspects include four executives from top-tier Istanbul clubs Galatasaray and Besiktas, while hundreds of players were referred to the Federation's disciplinary board with dozens facing criminal charges.
"Any suspicious structure, relationship, or act that undermines the spirit of sport and casts doubt on football's credibility will be pursued decisively," Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said in a statement posted on X.
The scandal hampers Turkish soccer's recent revival, which included World Cup qualification after a 24-year absence, as the country prepares to co-host the men's 2032 European Championship with Italy.
The match-fixing scandal in Turkey is growing. 17 people have now been arrested, reports the AP news agency. "We continue our fight," writes Justice Minister Akin Gurlek on X.
