Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon kill Lebanese journalist, wound another

Amal Khalil was killed in a strike that also wounded another journalist, and rescuers were blocked for hours, press groups said.

  • On Wednesday, an Israeli airstrike in Tiri, southern Lebanon, killed Al-Akhbar journalist Amal Khalil while she covered the conflict. The 43-year-old had documented the region since 2006.
  • Following an initial strike on a vehicle, Khalil and photographer Zeinab Faraj sought shelter in a nearby house, which Israel subsequently targeted. Rescuers alleged the Israeli military fired a sound grenade and live ammunition, blocking access to the trapped pair.
  • Lebanon Prime Minister Nawaf Salam vowed to pursue "war crimes" charges before international bodies. The Committee to Protect Journalists expressed "outrage" and warned the obstruction of rescue efforts "may amount to a war crime."
  • Mourners gathered in Baysariyeh on Thursday for her funeral procession, while Mehdi Hasan, a senior journalist at MSNBC, attacked Sky News's coverage, saying those employing the writers "don't deserve to have jobs in journalism."
  • Despite a US-backed ceasefire announced last week, Wednesday's strikes killed five people, marking the highest daily toll since the truce began. The Israel-Hezbollah war has killed at least 2,300 people and displaced more than one million since early March.
