Israeli fire kills two people in Gaza, medics say
Gaza health officials said at least 2 Palestinians were killed, while Israel said it struck a militant amid stepped-up attacks.
On Monday, an Israeli strike on a tent in Khan Younis, Gaza Strip, killed at least two Palestinians, health officials said. The military operation targeted a militant in the area.
Israel has increased military activity in recent weeks, citing Hamas ceasefire violations involving alleged rearming and renewed attacks. These stepped-up strikes follow accusations that the group continues to undermine the peace agreement.
Conflicting accounts complicate diplomatic efforts, as Hamas denied attempting attacks or rebuilding its arsenal. The group instead accused Israel of undermining the Gaza peace deal.
Since last October's ceasefire, Gaza health officials report at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire. Over the same period, Israel says four of its soldiers have been killed by militants.
The US-brokered Gaza ceasefire deal requires Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw troops, yet little progress has been made toward implementation. This impasse prevents resolution to the ongoing conflict and hinders territory reconstruction efforts.
