Israeli committee bars Arab parties from election
- On Wednesday, the Central Elections Committee voted 19-5 to disqualify Knesset Member Ofer Cassif of the Hadash party from the 26th Knesset, citing alleged "support for an armed struggle against Israel."
- The Likud party initiated the petition under Section 7A of Basic Law: The Knesset, which permits banning candidates who deny Israel's existence or support armed struggle against the state.
- Committee chairman Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg cautioned members to exercise extreme care, noting that disqualification prevents a segment of the public from voting. "Here, each and every one of you is, in a sense, a judge," Sohlberg said.
- Cassif denounced the decision as "a gross distortion of reality and a complete perversion of the democratic spirit," arguing that opposing government policy does not constitute harm to the state.
- The decision now moves to the High Court of Justice, which has historically overturned such disqualifications citing a lack of "critical mass" regarding evidence, while other requests to bar Arab and communist candidates remain pending.
