Israel Targets Top Hamas Leader in Deadly Gaza Strike on Anniversary

The military said the strike targeted a senior Hamas political figure and left five people dead, while Israeli assessments said the outcome remained unconfirmed.

  • On Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces targeted Ali al-Amoudi, Hamas's de facto leader in Gaza, in an airstrike on the al-Asala building in the Remal neighborhood at approximately 2 a.m. Local officials reported five people killed, including four women.
  • Released in the 2011 Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange alongside Yahya Sinwar, al-Amoudi headed Hamas's media operations and served as Sinwar's office director. Following Sinwar's killing in October 2024 and deaths of other senior leaders, his standing grew significantly as a central figure managing Hamas affairs in Gaza.
  • Five Palestinians died in the strike, identified as Maysa Abu Daoud, 55; her daughter Maria Abu Daoud, 36; Yasmin al-Boubou, 48; Halloum al-Boubou, 23; and Bilal Ali Ouda, 20. Two were Christians—Maysa and Mary al-Najjar—from Gaza's community of fewer than 1,000 people.
  • Israeli officials stated "the results of the strike are under review," though security sources told broadcaster Kan al-Amoudi's survival chances were "very slim." The strike complicates his contested leadership bid against Nizar Awadallah, whose appeal suspended internal voting.
  • The operation continues an intensifying Israeli campaign; the IDF and Shin Bet reported 70 operatives killed in September alone, including three brigade commanders and nine company commanders. The strike occurs despite a ceasefire in effect since October 2025, with Gaza's health ministry reporting more than 1,440 Palestinians killed since the agreement began.
