Israeli Foreign Ministry lashes out after Dutch city upholds ban on Hapoel Be'er Sheva supporters attending Europa League match over security concerns
Israel has reacted with indignation to the banning of supporters of the Israeli football club Hapoel Beer Sheva from Alkmaar. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is urging the reversal of that decision, writes news site The Times of Israel.
Israel accused the Netherlands on Monday of becoming a "hotbed of anti-Semitism" after authorities in the Dutch city of Alkmaar confirmed a ban on Israeli football fans attending a Europa League match, despite diplomatic pressure from Tel Aviv. Fans of Israeli club Hapoel Be'er Sheva were banned from attending the match.
The European clashes with Hapoel Be’er Sheva are not limited to the football field. After both Union and the Dutch club AZ Alkmaar took measures to bar supporters of the Israeli club, the Israeli government is attempting to reverse those decisions. For the time being, however, Alkmaar is standing firm: Thursday’s Europa League match will go ahead, but without away fans.
