Israel is tightening its grip on east Jerusalem with evictions and demolitions
Rights groups say 2025 saw over 260 demolitions and a 70% rise from three years earlier as Palestinian neighborhoods face more evictions.
Authorities have demolished at least 116 structures in East Jerusalem so far this year, marking escalating evictions in neighborhoods like Silwan and Batan al-Hawah that residents say are the most severe in decades.
Israeli authorities approved nearly 9,000 housing permits for Jewish residents last year versus fewer than 700 for Palestinians, according to Bimkom, an Israeli rights group, making legal expansion virtually impossible for the latter.
Fakhri Abu Diab, whose home was demolished two years ago, remains displaced alongside some 1,500 Palestinians in al-Bustan who face potential eviction at any time, their lives suspended in uncertainty.
Yair Dvir, a spokesperson for B'Tselem, stated the evictions demonstrate "the cooperation between settler organizations and state institutions" toward displacing Palestinian residents with Israeli settlers.
Daniel Luria, executive director of Ateret Cohanim, defended the evictions as correcting a "monumental historical injustice," citing efforts to return Jews to neighborhoods inhabited before the early 20th century.
