Israel Detains Jerusalem Grand Mufti, Bars Him From Al-Aqsa Mosque for One Week
Authorities released Sheikh Muhammad Hussein after a Friday sermon detention and imposed a one-week ban from the Al-Aqsa compound.
On Friday, Israeli authorities banned Sheikh Muhammad Hussein from Al-Aqsa Mosque for one week after detaining him following his Friday sermon at the compound.
Raids at the site have surged under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, violating the decades-old status quo where the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf administers the compound while Jewish worship occurs at the Western Wall.
Itamar Ben-Gvir has led the push for Jewish prayer inside the compound, while Netanyahu backed moves in January to loosen Jewish access restrictions, insisting these do not violate existing arrangements.
These incursions coincide with record settlement expansion in the West Bank and rising settler violence; rights groups claim more than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023 under what they say is ethnic cleansing policy.
This incident continues a series of measures targeting Muslim and Christian holy sites, with authorities having detained Sheikh Muhammad Hussein on multiple occasions since 2022 as Jewish extremist prayers have become routine.
