Israel Football Association Strongly Denounces Ireland Manager Heimir Hallgrímsson Over 'Genocide' Remarks
The Israel Football Association called the Ireland manager ignorant and hypocritical after he said his players were uncomfortable facing Israel.
On Monday, the Israel Football Association attacked Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson, calling his comments "stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy" ahead of the Nations League fixtures.
Tensions escalated after the Republic of Ireland manager told reporters last week, "We’re not playing with genocide; we’re playing against genocide." The organization responded on social media, accusing the manager of embodying those very traits.
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin defended the coach on Tuesday, describing the organization's remarks as "unacceptable" and stating they "should be withdrawn." Martin added that the nation "can't keep denying what the world knows" regarding Gaza.
More than 160 Irish athletes signed an open letter urging the national team to boycott the matches, while protesters gathered outside the team's Dublin hotel. The Football Association of Ireland reluctantly committed to fulfilling the fixtures.
Matches against Israel will take place at neutral venues in Debrecen, Hungary, on Sunday and Backa Topola, Serbia, on October 4. Both fixtures will be played behind closed doors, with the association citing operational and security concerns.
