Israel Says US Backs Striking Beirut Suburbs if Hezbollah Attacks
Israel said 3,400 people have been killed in Lebanon since March as fighting with Hezbollah threatens a wider ceasefire.
On Tuesday, Israel warned that the United States would not restrain it from striking Hezbollah's bastions in Beirut's suburbs if the Iran-backed group continues to target northern Israeli towns.
President Donald Trump announced an agreement to halt attacks, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government maintains that the Lebanese capital's southern suburbs remain potential targets.
The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported Tuesday that "the cumulative toll of the aggression from March 2 to June 2 has reached 3,468 dead and 10,577 injured," with more than 1.2 million people uprooted.
While Lebanese negotiators seek a full ceasefire in Washington, Hezbollah press office head Youssef al-Zein said the group will "monitor developments both on the battlefield and in diplomatic channels in the coming days."
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that if attacks on Israeli communities continue, the military will strike the Dahiyeh quarter in Beirut, describing this policy as a simple test of security.
At the door of the second round of talks between Israel and Lebanon, Minister Israel Katz and Netanyahu defined a US-validated principle of reciprocal attack on Beirut.
