ISP: Teen taken into custody for reckless homicide after fatal shooting of 14-year-old

Indiana State Police said the suspect was taken into custody at the scene and charged with reckless homicide after the victim died from a head wound.

  • On Sunday evening, 14-year-old Jameson Crawford was fatally shot in the head at a home on East Oak Drive in Salem, Indiana, approximately 100 miles south of Indianapolis.
  • Detectives took a second 14-year-old into custody at the scene and charged him with reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony, transporting him to the Allen County Juvenile Center in Fort Wayne.
  • Indiana State Police assumed the investigation from Salem Police Department, with an autopsy conducted Monday morning. Authorities confirmed the two boys knew each other with no ongoing threat to the public.
  • State police spokesperson Carey Huls said there was "likely a friendship there," adding, "You know, it's just another situation where people have to be careful when there's firearms around and make sure that they're safe."
  • Residents described the shooting as a "sad situation for everyone involved," noting that such violence is highly unusual for Salem's quiet neighborhoods where some neighbors have lived for more than 50 years.
