Islamist militants kill 10 police officers in northwest Pakistan, say police

Police said explosive-laden quadcopters and an ambush killed 11 officers, while security forces later killed 15 militants in the retaliatory battle.

  • On Wednesday, terrorists attacked the Khazina Banda Checkpoint in Hangu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killing 11 police officers, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Diyar Khan. Security forces launched an immediate counter-operation, killing eight militants.
  • Security forces foiled an infiltration attempt by more than 100 terrorists belonging to Fitna Al-Khawarij, who tried to enter Zargari, Shinawari, and Naryab from the Orakzai district's mountainous regions. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police and the Counter Terrorism Department repelled the assault.
  • During the clashes, Hangu District Police Officer Tariq Habib escaped unhurt after his vehicle came under fire. A total of 28 police personnel were injured, including DSP Mujahid Hussain and five officers wounded directly at the Khazina Banda Checkpoint.
  • Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and K-P Chief Minister Sohail Afridi strongly condemned the attack, paying tribute to the fallen. "The families of the martyrs will be provided every possible assistance," Afridi said, emphasizing peace as the government's priority.
  • Authorities continue surveillance and clearance operations to prevent militant resurgence in the region. Separately, a joint search operation in Swat concluded recently, where one police officer and four Village Defence Committee members were martyred while security forces killed six terrorists.
