Va. and Md. Senators Press Trump Administration for ‘Basic’ DC Golf Course Plans
Differing designs have fueled concern over whether the 1910 cherry grove will be kept as the administration seeks a championship-style course.
- On Friday, Senators Chris Van Hollen, Angela Alsobrooks, Mark Warner, and Tim Kaine pressed the Trump Administration for details on East Potomac Park redevelopment, citing transparency concerns regarding public access and historic preservation.
- Concerns intensified after photos from June 28 showed a design excluding a historic 1910 cherry tree grove, contradicting a design Secretary Doug Burgum previously shared that appeared to preserve the trees.
- The lawmakers wrote that the Administration provided only a "low-resolution image," leaving Congress in the dark regarding the project's scope, funding, and potential environmental risks to the Potomac River waterfront.
- On July 6, the judge overseeing a lawsuit against the renovation ordered the Administration to disclose by July 17 who created the conceptual renderings reviewed during the June 28 tour.
- The senators set a July 20 deadline for the Interior Department to respond to their questions, following five months of silence regarding the lease termination for the National Links Trust and the proposed redevelopment.
