'Is this the change people wanted?': Mamata alleges BJP-backed attack during TMC rally
On Wednesday, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee was seen apparently slapping a party worker during a protest march in Kolkata. She gestured for the man to move away as security personnel escorted him from the area.
Organized by the TMC's student and youth wings, the rally protested the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur, spanning from Ballygunge Phari to Hazra Crossing. Clashes between TMC and BJP workers broke out during the procession.
Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters blocked the procession and attacked TMC workers, while claiming police ignored court orders and confiscated microphones despite "court permission." Police used batons to disperse clashing groups at several locations.
Calling the police's actions a violation of the Calcutta High Court's order, Banerjee announced her party would initiate contempt proceedings. She also claimed officers acted in favor of the BJP instead of maintaining law and order.
Accusing the Centre of suppressing democratic protests through intimidation, Banerjee further claimed her residence has been under police surveillance since the morning. She alleged the police were no longer functioning impartially.
