The smartphone ban at school does not keep teenagers away from their smartphones, because they make up for the 'lost time' at home. This is evident from a study by Ghent University. According to the students themselves, other effects, such as better concentration or more social contact, also fail to materialize (for the time being). VRT NWS lists 5 of these failed effects.
Despite the ban at school, teenagers spend just as much time on their smartphones as before. This is evident from a study by Ghent University. Young people make up for the hours they do not spend on their smartphones at school at home afterwards. According to the same study, students themselves experience hardly any positive effects from the ban. We visited Kindsheid Jesu in Hasselt and asked students and management what they think of the ban.
Since Minister of Education Zuhal Demir (N-VA) banned smartphones in schools, students have been using their phones much more at home. Moreover, the measure does not lead to increased concentration at school. This is evident from a first UGent study into the effects of the ban.
