Budapest mayor says probe of banned Pride march sees him as a 'suspect'
The mayor of Budapest said on Thursday he had become a "suspect" in a police investigation targeting the organisers of an LGBTQ+ rights rally that turned into an anti-government protest last month.
The Hungarian police will ask Chief of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, as a suspect in connection with the organisation of the Pride march in June, writes Politico, reading the Hungarian press. The measure comes after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán tried to cancel Pride Budapest this year, but the capital's work found a legal port to allow the event to take place.
Budapest Mayor Gergelj Karachonj announced today that he has become a suspect in the organization of the June Pride Parade in Budapest and that he is scheduled to be questioned by the police next week.
In the Hungarian capital, despite the ban, the Pride Parade took place, authorities investigated unknown. The mayor is, according to his own statement, suspect.
