IRS Increases Standard Business Mileage Rate for 2026
The IRS raised the business mileage reimbursement rate by 2.5 cents to 72.5 cents per mile to reflect inflation and vehicle operating costs, effective Jan. 1.
- Setting the 2026 benchmark at 72.5 cents per mile, the IRS announced this week that it raised the standard mileage rate effective Jan. 1, with most drivers seeing it Friday.
- The IRS said the shift responds to rising inflation and vehicle costs, applying to gas, diesel, electric and hybrid vehicles even as gas prices trend downward and AAA reports about $2.83.
- The IRS also revised related mileage rates for medical, moving and charitable uses, cutting the medical and moving rates to 20.5 cents per mile and holding the charitable rate at 14 cents.
- For workers without per-mile pay, the standard rate can be applied at tax time, and employees could see higher reimbursements or lower taxes this year.
- Many employers who reimburse per mile, such as restaurants with delivery drivers, use the standard mileage rate , while people who use their car for work have other reimbursement choices; last year a gallon of gas cost about $3.06.
