Donegal All-Ireland Winner James McHugh Dies in Crash
Gardaí said the crash left McHugh dead at the scene and a woman seriously hurt, while witnesses on the route are being sought.
- On Monday, former Donegal All-Ireland winner James McHugh died following a road collision on the N3 at Drummallaght, between Virginia and Cavan, shortly before 2 p.m. The 60-year-old was driving a car that collided with a van.
- A celebrated figure in Donegal GAA, McHugh was a key member of the historic 1992 All-Ireland winning team and earned Man of the Match honors. He played senior inter-county football for Donegal from 1990 to 1996.
- His wife, Noreen, was seriously injured in the crash and airlifted to Beaumont Hospital for treatment. CLG Chill Chartha stated they were "devastated to hear of the tragic and untimely passing of one of our own."
- Former Donegal manager Brian McEniff told Donegal Live he was "broken-hearted," calling McHugh a man who "had the heart of a lion." Local Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty said McHugh "gave so much" to Donegal GAA.
