Ireland's Cricket Team Changes Coach a Day After Sealing T20 Series Win over India
Cricket Ireland said Gary Wilson will replace Malan as Ireland prepare for August one-day internationals and 2027 World Cup qualifiers.
On Monday, Ireland Men head coach Heinrich Malan announced his resignation after more than four years, stepping down shortly after guiding the team to a historic 2-0 T20I series sweep over India.
Despite his contract extending into early 2027, Cricket Ireland stated Malan feels "the timing is right in the cycle to step back" following the successful India series.
Reflecting on his tenure, Malan expressed "great pride" in achievements including a T20 World Cup victory against England, Ireland's first Test win against Afghanistan, and a first home Test win versus Zimbabwe.
Gary Wilson replaces Malan, becoming the first Irish-born head coach in over 30 years, with Malan assisting the transition over the coming month to ensure continuity.
The leadership change allows the new head coach to use the ODI series against Afghanistan in August as important preparation for the 50-over World Cup Qualifiers early in 2027.
