Iraq can disarm factions only when the US withdraws, PM says
BAGHDAD: Iraq has pledged to bring all weapons under the control of the state, but that will not work so long as there is a US-led coalition in the country that some Iraqi factions view as an occupying force, the prime minister said on Monday.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed that disarming armed groups in the country is linked to the withdrawal of international coalition forces scheduled for next September, stressing that his government is continuing its efforts to control illegal weapons and seek to win a second term in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
