Iranian students protest for third day as US pressure mounts
Students at multiple universities clashed with Basij forces and burned flags while commemorating victims of a crackdown that killed over 7,000, human rights groups reported.
- Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani on Feb 24 said students have a right to protest but must `understand the red lines`, including `Sacred things and the flag`.
- On Saturday, February 21, students at universities across Tehran and other cities revived slogans from Jan 8–9 protests, amid clashes and unrest following reopening.
- Students staged symbolic mockery and chants as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sent Basij forces into universities, while videos on Feb 23 showed students burning the Islamic Republic flag.
- By Monday evening, demonstrations spread beyond Tehran to other universities, reports said state-backed militias injured students including at Sharif University, and Mohajerani announced a fact-finding mission.
