Iran warns of 'destructive' influence on diplomacy ahead of Netanyahu's US trip

Iran says past Israeli attacks threaten nuclear talks and urges the US to resist external pressures, focusing strictly on nuclear issues, spokesman said Tuesday.

  • On Feb 10, Tehran warned that Benjamin Netanyahu's Washington visit could have a `destructive` influence on diplomacy as Tehran and Washington resumed talks in Muscat.
  • Tehran and Washington resumed talks in Muscat on Friday after earlier negotiations collapsed following Israel's unprecedented bombing campaign last June, which targeted senior Iranian military officials, nuclear scientists and sites.
  • Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks on Israel and targeted the largest US military base in Qatar after the United States launched strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities.
  • With those demands in play, Netanyahu's office said he `believes any negotiations must include limitations on ballistic missiles and a halting of the support for the Iranian axis`.
  • The talks came after US threats and a deployment of a US aircraft carrier group following Iran's deadly crackdown on anti-government protests last month, Baqaei said.
