Iran War Diplomacy Turns to Reopening Strait of Hormuz
Qatar urged Tehran to respect freedom of navigation as Iran prepares conditions for reopening a route that has seen 70 incidents and 19 deaths since the war began.
- On Thursday, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani visited Tehran, underscoring to senior Iranian officials "the importance of respecting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law."
- Following this diplomatic mission, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, announced Tehran is drafting conditions for reopening the waterway, stating the United States must take "practical steps" to meet Iranian demands.
- Iran and Oman have agreed in principle on administering traffic and sharing revenues through a shipping corridor, though officials noted the two countries are still working on agreement details.
- Despite President Donald Trump's claims the strait is open, ship tracking services estimate activity remains at roughly 5 per cent to 15 per cent of normal volumes due to Iranian threats against vessels.
- Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of the US military's Central Command, stated, "Bottom line: today, international shipping lanes are open and momentum is building," as American forces continue clearing sea mines laid by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

By Elwely Elwelly and Eman AbouhassiraDUBAI, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Mediators in the Iran war are stepping up efforts to get the Strait of Hormuz reopened, with Tehran agreeing to draw up a list of conditions to restore normal traffic after a Qatari emissary pressed the Iranians to respect freedom of navigation.
Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei also addressed the possible reopening of the Strait of Ormuz, stating that “the United States must first take concrete steps to meet the conditions” in Tehran.
